Women’s Hormones FAQ’s

What blood test are done?

If you're considering HRT (like bioidentical hormones or a specific estrogen/progesterone regimen), it’s always a good idea to discuss with your healthcare provider whether these are the best tests for your personal treatment plan and health goals. These are the tests that will allow accurate diagnosis and treatment.

  1. Progesterone: Useful in tracking progesterone levels, especially if you're using progesterone or a progestin as part of your HRT regimen. It helps balance the effects of estrogen and is important for uterine health.
  2. Testosterone Total: Important to monitor testosterone levels, particularly for women on HRT that includes testosterone, as imbalances can lead to symptoms like excess hair growth, acne, or changes in mood.
  3. Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG): SHBG binds to sex hormones like estrogen and testosterone. This test helps assess the availability of free, active hormones in your system. Elevated SHBG can sometimes indicate an imbalance.
  4. Estradiol (E2): A key test for monitoring estrogen levels, which is central to most female HRT regimens. This is a crucial marker to ensure you're getting the right amount of estrogen for symptom relief.
  5. DHEA-Sulfate (DHEA-S): DHEA is a precursor hormone to both estrogen and testosterone. This test can be helpful to assess adrenal function and overall hormone balance, though it may not always be directly linked to HRT unless you're supplementing with DHEA.
  6. FSH (Follicle-Stimulating Hormone): FSH levels are typically elevated in postmenopausal women or those who have low estrogen. Monitoring this helps gauge ovarian function or the need for estrogen replacement.
  7. LH (Luteinizing Hormone): Like FSH, LH levels can be used to assess ovarian function, and they may also provide information on the balance of other reproductive hormones.
  8. Cortisol: Cortisol is the primary stress hormone, and monitoring it is helpful if you're concerned about adrenal health, stress, or any imbalances caused by HRT or other medications.

What will happen at the consultation?

At your hormone replacement consultation, you will have a lengthy discussion with the practitioner regarding your health history, medications, lifestyle, symptoms, and goals.

  • Review your health history: Your doctor will ask about your current symptoms, family medical history, diet, and lifestyle. Surgeries, illnesses, and any diagnosis'.
  • Physical exam: Your doctor may take your vital signs, and perform a basic physical, like listening to your lungs and heart.
  • Laboratory tests: Your doctor may want to order additional tests to check your hormone levels.
  • Discuss your goals: Your doctor will ask about your health goals and concerns.
  • Create a treatment plan: Your doctor will develop a personalized treatment plan that may include medications, peptides, and nutraceuticals. We will decide if bio-identical hormone replacement or other delivery routs are more appropriate to meet your specific goals and that fit your lifestyle.

Why you might need HRT:

·         You might have a hormone imbalance due to an underlying thyroid disorder, aging, or other factors.

·         You might have low testosterone, which can affect your mood, sex drive, and weight management.

·         You might have an imbalance of estrogen and progesterone, which can affect your sleep patterns and overall well-being.

Possible Treatment Options:

The Practitioner will be able to prescribe the appropriate medications, or perform the pellet insertion in the office, so you can start feeling better right away.

What are Pellets?

Pellets are Bio-Identical Hormones made from Yam roots. That are then inserted via an instrument called a trochar. The pellets are inserted subcutaneously, and a sterile bandage will be applied. Bio-Idential Hormones like pellets are oftentimes a better choice, as the medication is consistently released over time. There is a steady amount of medication. As opposed to injections or oral medications which can cause drastic spikes in hormone levels. We will decide which is best for you during your visit.
