A Qualitative Respirator Fit Test is a pass/fail method
that ensures your respirator provides a secure seal—using taste or odor

- Threshold Testing – Confirms you can detect the

Donning – You wear the actual make, model, and size used on the job (with
any additional gear such as glasses).
- Fit Exercises – Perform seven one‑minute
exercises: normal breathing, deep breathing, head movement, bending,
talking, and final breathing. No grimace (only needed in quantitative
testing) (OSHA).
- Result Evaluation – If you detect taste or odor
during the exercises, the fit is inadequate, and another respirator is
tested. No detection = pass and certification.
⚠️ When QLFT Is Appropriate
QLFT is permitted by OSHA only when:
- Exposure levels are below 10 ×
PEL
- Environment is not IDLH
(Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health)
- Exposure levels are known
- Fit factor requirement is less
than 500
(If any of those are not met, a quantitative fit test (QNFT) is
required instead.)
